Doctor recruitment system ‘confusing’.
The Rural Doctors Workforce Agency will push for a more uniform process for recruiting overseas-trained doctors.
A federal parliamentary inquiry is taking evidence in Adelaide.
It is looking into issues for overseas doctors seeking full Australian registration.
Agency chief executive Lyn Poole says the process still varies between states.
She says much-needed doctors can end up deterred in what has become a highly-competitive market internationally.
“That causes quite some confusion for them because depending on which state you choose to come in through, you’ll be subjected to different types of testing mechanisms in different orders,” she said.
“Currently it’s very confusing. If you’re a doctor who’s residing offshore from Australia and you’re trying to navigate your way through this system it’s incredibly complex.”
