How do I get assessed to work as a GP in Australia?

The RACGP and AMC have recently developed the RACGP Specialist Pathway for eligible international medical graduates to achieve Fellowship in Australia. Initial verification is made through the Australian Medical Council. Medipeople works in coordination with the applicant and these bodies to manage the process.

Am I eligible to work as a GP in Australia?

If you hold one of the qualifications listed below you are considered equivalent to an Australian college fellow and there is no need for further training or College examination to obtain RACGP fellowship. Other qualifications may also be considered as partially comparable but further training will be required.

Can I work as a GP in any location?

Overseas trained doctors are restricted to which locations they can work by a mechanism called District of Workforce Shortage (DWS). The restriction has been in operation since 1996 and requires OTDs to work General Practice Jobs in DWS in order to obtain a provider number to access Medicare benefits. Australian GP’s are paid by Medicare on service per fee basis. DWS is calculated by the number of doctors available in ratio to the population. Due to Australia’s rapid population growth many DWS locations are in or close to major towns and cities.

Ten Year Moratorium for OTDs?

This restriction on the provider number is in place for a period of ten years from the time when the OTD first obtained registration in Australia. From 1 July 2010, the Moratorium reduction scheme offers more incentives to work as a rural GP. Reduction of the Ten Year Moratorium may be available, depending on the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (or ASGC-RA) of your primary Medicare Provider Number. There is also a five year Moratorium’s now in operation that can lead to a faster removal of all provider number restrictions.

How do I get assessed to work as a GP in New Zealand?

Assessment is made by the Medical Council of New Zealand and the Royal New Zealand College of General Practice. There is no location restriction on OTD General Practitioners and they are free to work in any area they wish.

In order to work in a permanent GP position, GP’s require Vocational or Pre-Vocational registration. If you do not hold a relevant Australasian post graduate qualification then the assessment process does take several months. Overseas trained doctors who satisfy the criteria must complete between 12-18 months supervised practice and assessment on provisional vocational scope before being considered for vocational scope.

Overseas trained GP’s may also work for up to 6 months in locum position on special purpose registration.

Am I eligible to work as a GP in New Zealand?

If you are an internationally GP looking for GP jobs in New Zealand then you may be eligible for registration if you hold one of the postgraduate qualifications listed below, meet the English language requirements and have completed at least two years vocational GP training.
