Other questions that might be playing on your mind…

Can I work in any specialty?
It is possible to work in a variety of different specialties, the most popular being Emergency Medicine in Australia. Emergency Medicine is different to the UK/Ireland as there is much more emphasis on patient management within a department with plenty of exposure to hands on procedural training. This forms a great platform for advancing your career in Australia and will be required by any college in the future. Medipeople can recruit you directly into a training position approved by the local colleges.

Can I work as a Locum?
In order to work as a locum doctor you are required to have general registration with AHPRA or the MCNZ. It takes a minimum of ones years work (permanent or fixed term) in Australia before you are eligible for this. We help you obtain full registration and permanent residency and can then offer locum work.

Can I work in rotations?
Hospitals in Australia and New Zealand have either 4 or 5 rotations per academic year depending on the hospital. The academic year in Australia runs from January – December and in New Zealand November – November. It is possible to get a variety of rotations in Australia and New Zealand or positions in specific specialties.

What rotations can I expect to get?
It is possible to get rotations in Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, O&G, Paediatrics, ICU, Anaesthetics, General Surgery and Psychiatry. Certain specialties are more competitive in Australia at junior level such as Anaesthetics and Surgery and are more obtainable in rotations rather than a solid contract position.

What are the minimum requirements to work in Australia and New Zealand?
Once you have completed 1 year internship and have gained full registration in the country of medical graduation. If you do not complete this then you cannot meet the criteria set out for assessment of International Medical Graduates (IMGs) by the Australian Medical Council (AMC).

When can I apply for a position in Australia?
There is no harm in sending your resume in to Medipeople at any time. We would usually suggest around 6 months at the latest before your ideal start date; however we have placed doctors up to 1 year before their proposed state date. Each hospital is unique and starts its recruitment at different times during the year which is why Medipeople keep strong relationships with their clients so that we can forecast when their recruitment will start. We would suggest applying for positions around 6 months before a position is due to start to allow for short listing, interviews, reference checks and then processing applications for registration and visas etc which can take around 10 – 12 weeks to complete.

Do Medipeople help with visa and registration applications?
Yes. Medipeople have an in-house migration department with registered migration agents who assist you through this complicated process from start to finish; this is a free benefit to doctors who have accepted a position through Medipeople and can take much of the stress out of dealing with applications to Australia or New Zealand from the other side of the world. The risk of getting your application incorrect which can lead to huge delays and your contract even being cancelled are much reduced through the security of working with a professional migration service.

Cost of working in…
…Australia;
  The cost of each application and supporting documentation required to work in Australia is around $2000 AUD payable by the doctor. This includes applications to the Australian Medical Council (AMC), Medical Board of Australia (MBA) and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), as well as completing health checks as part of your visa application and notification of original documents by a Justice of the Peace.
…New Zealand;
  The cost of working in New Zealand is an estimated cost of around $1500 NZD payable by the doctor. You would need to apply for registration and practicing certificate with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) plus the Work Permit fee and health checks as part of your visa application and notification of original documents by a Justice of the Peace.

Am I eligible for relocation expenses from the hospital?
Not every hospital or state offers relocation expenses, it does depend on the state and hospital; for more information on which hospitals offer financial assistance with relocation, please ask a consultant. If you are eligible for relocation expenses then the amounts can vary from hospital to hospital, state to state and relocation reimbursements do come with conditions set out by each hospital.

I am coming over with friends and we all want to work in the same hospital, can we apply together?
Yes. Medipeople are able to organise positions for groups of friends coming over to Australia and New Zealand, please contact a consultant today with resumes and to discuss the details of your group. If you do apply separately, please make sure you mention you are applying with a group so that we can put your applications together.

I want to return to the UK for interviews in February / March, is it possible to get time off?
Most hospitals are aware that this is the situation for most PGY2/PGY3’s from the UK who work in Australia / New Zealand for 1 year, however this is down to the discretion of the hospital and we suggest that it is something that is discussed up front with the hospital so they can be aware of their rosters for that time.
