What is involved in obtaining medical registration and a visa?
There is a great deal of complexity in meeting the legislative requirements for internationally trained doctors entering Australia with no single framework in place. The process is handled by both the state and federal governments. The requirements of the doctor will differ depending on your level of experience and location of the position.

Applicants are first assessed by the Australian Medical Council in line with various registration pathways. Primary qualifications and English language is verified. Specialist doctors make dual application to the specialist college for assessment. Once these assessments are completed an application is made to the registering authority (Australian Medical Board or state medical boards) for a specific category of registration. A working visa (subclass 457) can only be issued once registration is obtained.

Any incorrect or incomplete documentation that is submitted will cause delays in the process and there are many potential pitfalls. Medipeople Migration Services has a great deal of experience in processing medical doctors of grades and specialties.

  • We have developed our own streamlined framework to provide doctors with the quickest and easiest experience.
  • We review all applications at each stage to check for errors before forwarding for assessment.
  • We provide unlimited, free, 24 hour support to all our doctors.
  • We chase up all applications to make sure they are processed within the agreed timeframe.
  • We are registered to provide assistance by the Migration Agents Registration Authority.

What is a Registered Migration Agent?
The law requires that migration agents operating in Australia be registered with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (the Office of the MARA).

The Office of the MARA regulates the migration advice profession and undertakes a range of functions as defined in s316 of the Migration Act 1958. These functions include:

  • processing applications for registration
  • administering continuing professional development
  • monitoring the conduct of registered migration agents, and
  • Investigating complaints about, and taking appropriate disciplinary action against, registered migration agents who breach the Migration Agents Code of Conduct or otherwise behave in an unprofessional or unethical way.

People who provide immigration assistance in Australia as unregistered persons may be subject to penalties, ranging from fines of up to $5,500 to imprisonment for up to 10 years. (Source https://www.mara.gov.au/Agent-Information/default.aspx)
